The presence in or introduction into the air of a substance which has harmful or poisonous effects. Air pollution occurs when harmful substances including particulates and biological molecules are introduced into Earth's atmosphere. Pollutants are emitted in completely different ways.
Air pollution is mainly emitted through the exhaust of motor vehicles, the combustion of fossil fuels, the burning of coal and oil.
Most of the pollution from coal burning on Earth, comes from the production of electricity.

Air is a mixture of various gases of which 78 % is nitrogen and 21 % is oxygen. Other gases like carbon dioxide, argon, methane, helium, ozone and water vapours are also present in very small amounts.
When the air is contaminated by unwanted substances which have harmful effects on both the living and the non - lIving, it is referred to as air pollution.
The substances which contaminate air are called air pollutants.
Causes of Air Pollution
(1) Excessive burning of fossil fuels like coal, kerosene, petrol or diesel.
(2) Smoke from factories and vehicles.
(3) Use of certain substances like chlorofluorocarbons.
(4) Increasing in number of vehicles.
(5) Increasing population.
(6) Indiscriminate cutting down of trees.
Small contributions on our part can make a huge difference in the state of environment. We can plant trees and nurture the ones already present in the neighborhood. Many countries all over the world have reached an agreement to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases. This protocol requires countries to take appropriate measures to reduce their green house gas emissions. Above all, try to walk short distances. If we must take cars, try car - pool.
