Did you remember the first week in May in traditionally National Be Kind to Animals Week? It’s sometimes easy to forget. What isn’t easy to forget, or at least shouldn’t be, is the important role animals play in our life. The dog that greets you at the door, the cat that curls up in your lap, the hamster that fits in the palm of your hand, the rabbit that twitches its little nose, the goat that eats everything in sight, the horse that runs to you when you’re standing at the gate and the countless other domesticated animals and things they do that endear us to them.

Then there are the animals that run wild and free. The birds flying through the sky, the squirrels that seem to be everywhere, the deer calmly roaming the countryside, the fish swimming in the waters and all the other creatures in their habitats.

Humans share this planet with all animals. Treating them with respect is treating the earth with respect. It’s our responsibility to make sure animals are treated properly.

It may be harder with the wild animals, but there are programs and resources available to help protect them. As for our domesticated animal friends, our pets, protecting them is easier.

Just love and care for them. When you think about all they do for us, that’s asking for very little in return.

For the majority of pet owners, that loving and caring is directed to cats and dogs. So during this month of special recognition for our animal friends, give your cat an extra caress or your dog a little longer scratch behind the ear. As for owners of other pet animals, show them the extra attention they respond to the most.

The Boone Area Humane Society (BAHS) shelter joins shelters across the country in doing their part to promote kindness to animals by taking care of those that are homeless. Such animals may be strays, abused, owner or guardian surrenders, special needs or lost. The BAHS shelter works hard to either find forever homes for the animals, or in the case of lost animals, reunite them with their owners.

These are tasks animal shelters like the BAHS shelter take on all the time. The BAHS shelter staff know what we should all know - being kind to animals is not just a responsibility for a week, a month or a year, but for a lifetime.
