An algal bloom, also called an "algae bloom" in AP style, is a rapid increase or accumulation in the population of algae in freshwater or marine water systems, and is recognized by the discoloration in the water from their pigments.

A harmful algal bloom (HAB) is an algal bloom that causes negative impacts to other organisms via production of natural toxins, mechanical damage to other organisms, or by other means. HABs are often associated with large-scale marine mortality events and have been associated with various types of shellfish poisonings.

Algal blooms:

  • An algal bloom is a serious problem in the water bodies situated beside the human living spaces.
  • This is a phenomenon where there is a huge uncontrolled growth of algae over the water body.
  • This occurs due to drainage of nutrient materials like fertilizers and urine in the water bodies which act as nutrition to the algal bodies.
  • This actually threatens aquatic life. The algal layer actually hinders the solubility of oxygen to the water body.
  • This reduces the oxygen content of the water, killing it. It also produces toxins killing them.
