Dhamma is a set of edicts that formed a policy of the Mauryan emperor Ashoka, who succeeded to the Mauryan throne in modern-day India around 269 C.E. He is considered as one of the greatest kings of ancient India for his policies of public welfare.

ASHOKA'S DHAMMA :

• Ashoka's Dhamma was neither a religion nor a philosophy rather it was a way of living.

• Dhamma consists of some moral values and guidelines which should be followed by people in large.

• The one who follows Dhamma can get the path for salvation.

• Ashoka started preaching Dhamma after the Kalinga war.

Salient features of Dhamma :

• Prohibition of animal sacrifices and abolition of meaningless ceremonies.

• Humane treatment of animals and Brahmins.

• The master should treat the slave well and the government should treat the prisoner as a human.

• Tolerance towards the other sects .

• Replacing the Bherighosa with Dhammaghosa.

• Reaching the rural and teach the preach about Dhamma through Dhammayatras. etc..

• The preachers of Dhamma were called as "Dhamma Mahamatras" who used to travel to different area and preached Dhamma.
