After the Second World War, the world was divided into two major political groups, led by two superpowers- USSR( Eastern Bloc) and USA( Western Bloc) but after Independence, India did not want to be the part of either groups and chose to follow a policy of non- alignment in world affairs, which meant not aligning with either of the military blocs and thus, India, along with 29 newly Independent countries met at Bandung, Indonesia in 1955 and passed a resolution of five principles called as Panchsheel.

The Non- Aligned Movement (NAM) is a group of countries which do not align formally with or against any major power Bloc and as of 2012, the movement has about 120 members.

Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, President Tito of Yugoslavia and President Nasser of Egypt were the founding fathers of NAM.
