Protein energy malnutrition ( PEM ) is a deficiency of proteins in the diet . This is caused by feeding on protein poor diet . PEM is of two types of namely , kwashiorkor and marasmus . Proteins are body-building nutrients that can be obtained from food sources such as cabbage , potatoes , spinach , pulses , fish , milk , egg and meat .
