Government of West Bengal introduced a scheme titled "Sabooj Sathi" for distribution of Bicycles to the students of class IX to XII in all Govt. run/ Govt. aided/ Govt. sponsored schools.

The target was to cover more or less 40 lakh students in the state.The objective of this prakalpa was to reduce drop outs of girl education and promote education in the state.

This beautiful name for the project came to the Chief Minister's mind while she was on her way from Darjeeling to Bagdogra Airport.
