Raw materials refer to the basic materials from which finished products are made. In some cases, they are also used to produce the intermediate goods from which the final goods are made. Raw materials are usually present in unprocessed or minimally processed states and can be in either metallic or non-metallic states. Metallic raw materials are subjected to two processes. The primary step involves activities such as crushing, magnetic separation, roasting, leaching and flotation. The secondary step comprises activities such as alloying and smelting.

Raw materials are also referred to as feedstock. Crude oil is one of the most common examples of raw materials.
