Kolkata, Feb. 4 : Ruma Jhawar (20), a third year student of Smt. J. D. Birla Institute was abducted at gunpoint from near her house at Salt Lake this morning. Five calls, demanding a hefty ransom, we're made to the family from her mobile. After tracking the calls, police suspect they were made from Beliaghata and Shyambazar.
Around 8:20 a. m. Ruma left for college in a steel grey Tata Indica. Her classmate, Sarbari Mitra, was in the rear seat while Ruma's nephew, four-years-old Vedangsh, was sitting with her in the front. As soon as the car circled CA island and proceeded towards DA Block, an off-white Maruti van blocked its way and four men jumped out. Two of them wielded guns. They dragged Ruma out and bundled her into the van which then sped off towards EM Bypass.
Sarbari fled when she saw the guntoting men advancing. Her father Dr. S Mitra said " She went to Ruma's house and informed her family. Then she came home and collapsed."
Late tonight Ruma's uncle Mr. Shankar Jhawar said the family had established contact with her and she had told them that she was safe. Police were also hopeful about an early breakthrough, he said.
DGP Mr. Ajay Prasad said an inter-state alert had been sounded. The CID is investigating the case.
