Within four hours after a businessman was kidnapped for ransom in the district on Sunday, the Pudukottai police rescued him and detained six persons in connection with the crime.
The offence took place in Kottaipattinam, a coastal village, in the early hours on Sunday when businessman N. Jamal Mohammed, 53, was proceeding to a nearby mosque for prayer. A six-member gang in a car intercepted him midway and kidnapped him in their vehicle.
Jamal Mohamed runs a unit involved in export of seafood, said the police. The news of his kidnap caused a flutter in the village with the police immediately fanning out to trace Jamal Mohamed. Several police teams were immediately constituted for this purpose.
