Hi dude...  ’A’ is used before words starting with consonants..while ‘an’ is used before words starting with a vowel...but there are some exceptions..

For example, a is used for ‘a ball, a cat, a song’,etc.. while

an is used for ‘an apple, an elephant, an umbrella’,etc..

Exceptions are, for example, it should be said as a university and not an university even though it starts with a vowel bcoz it sounds like ‘yuniversity‘

while pronouncing and ’y’ is a consonant..
