Totstoy is a story about a merchant who plans to go on a fair while his wife continuously tells him not to go due to the bad dream she saw.
On his excursion he is accused of murdering a fellow merchant while he refuses again and again that he had not committed such as crime. He then finally meets Makar who confesses that he was the one who killed his fellow merchant.
Various characters play a part in this story. These mainly include:
Aivan Aksinonov - He is the main character of the story who is accused of the murder and stays in prison for 26 years. His character seems to change physically and spiritually throughout the story. He is young, full of fun and quite fond of signing in the first part of the story while he turns to a grey haired old man who prays to God quite often in the second half of the story.
Makar Semyonich - He is described as an old man in his sixties. He is the one who killed the merchant.
Ivan's wife - She is described as a caring, faithful and an obedient person. She stops Ivan to going to the fair as she had a bad dream about it but he does not seem to listen.
