Humayun (Persian: همایون, translit. Humāyūn), was the second emperorof the Mughal Empire, who ruled over territory in what is now Afghanistan, Pakistan, and parts of northern India and Bangladesh from 1530–1540 and again from 1555–1556. Like his father, Babur, he lost his kingdom early but regained it with the aid of the Safavid dynastyof Persia, with additional territory. At the time of his death in 1556, the Mughal Empire spanned almost one million square kilometres.

After Babur's death his elder son Nasir-ud-din Muhammad Humayun succeeded him in 1530 CE. In 1555 CE , Humayun tried to recapture Delhi after Sher Shah's death. He successfully annexed Lahore and occupied Delhi and Agra.
Afghans had a powerful leader in the form of Sher Khan the governor of Bihar.He defeated Humayun twice- in the Battle of Chausa in 1539 CE and in battle of Kannauj in 1540 CE. He had to face the revolts of his brothers who dissatisfied with their share of the kingdom.
