♠️ The operon model is a scheme to explain the induction and repression of enzymes. It was proposed to explain prokaryotic gene regulation.

♠️ The term operon was first coined by French academy of science in 1960.

♠️ Francois Jacob and Jacques Monad proposed model in 1961. They got Nobel prize in 1965.

♠️ E.coli expresses genes for glucose metabolism continuosly. Metabolism of other alternative types of sugars eg lactose are regulated specifically.

♠️ Lactose acts as an inducer i.e effector molecule. It stimulates expression of three enzymes i.e Beta galactosidase

  • Lactose permiase
  • Transacteylase

♠️In lac operon system the repressor is active .It has affinity for operator gene.

♠️ Repressor protein is product of regulator gene.

♠️Promotor gene is DNA segment at which RNA polymerase binds.♥️
