Thomas Babington Macaulay (1800 - 1859) was a British politician and historian who was credited with replacing Indian languages in schools in India, with English.

He argued that English was a far more superior language and should be the medium of instruction in offices and institutions in India. He was famous for saying that all the works of Sanskrit and Arabic put together were inferior to a single shelf of European texts.

He was also a noted Historian and was fluent in several languages including Dutch and French.
