Maharaja Ranjit Singh (1780 - 1839) ruled the Sikh Empire during the early part of the 19th century. As a child, he lost sight in his left eye due to smallpox. However, this did not stop him from fighting battles alongside his father as a teenager. He was instrumental in ousting the Afghans from his empire and uniting the several Sikh confederacies.

Ranjit Singh was the first Sikh ruler to resist the British invasions and was given the title 'Sher-e-Punjab' or Lion of Punjab. He helped rebuild the Harmandir Sahib in Amritsar along with several other Gurudwaras.

He was succeeded by his eldest son, Maharaja Kharak Singh.
