Warren Hasting was the first Governor-General of India between 1773 and 1785. He was also the first Governor of Fort William.

He was instrumental in creating several administrative, judicial, financial and commercial reforms.

It was under him that the post of Deputy Subedar was removed and replaced by English Collectors. He also shifted the Treasury of Bengal from Murshidabad to Calcutta. He also drastically reduced the pension of the Nawab of Bengal by half. He established the civil and criminal courts of Bengal and for the first time appointed Indian judges in the criminal courts.
