a rheostat commonly used in a laboratory. Its resistive element can be a metal wire or ribbon or carbon film or conducting liquid depending upon its use. A rheostat is normally used (i) to adjust the potential difference between two points in a circuit (when used as a potential divider) (ii) to change the resistance in a circuit (when used as a variable resistance.)

It can also be used as a fixed resistance. Its resistance and current rating is printed on it. Applications (1) to change the intensity of light (in) to control the speed of a motor (ii) to control intensity of sound (volume control).

Answer:

Rehostat is an adjustable or varible resistor.

It is used to control the electrical resistance of a circuit without interrupting the flow the current. Rehostat has three terminals and usally consists of a resistive wire wrapped to form a toriod coil with a wiper that slides along the surface of the coil.
