The Indian Rebellion of 1857 had diverse political, economic, military, religious and social causes. ... The spark that led to a mutiny in several sepoy companies was the issue of new gunpowder cartridges for the Enfield rifle in February, 1857. revolt of 1857 was caused due to various reasons prominent being military. the major military reasons were:
1. Low pay given to the indian soldiers as compared to their british counterparts; british soldiers were paid around 8 times more than indians
2. Bleak prospects of Promotion ; Indian soldiers could not acquire ranks higher than those of subedar in british army. even those who previously held higher position were deprived of it.
3. Religious Problems; british did not like the indian soldiers wearing turbans or keeping a beard they also did not follow caste system in providing preferences to the soldiers.
