The Indian Rebellion of 1857 had diverse political, economic, military, religious and social causes. ... The spark that led to a mutiny in several sepoy companies was the issue of new gunpowder cartridges for the Enfield rifle in February, 1857. A rumour was spread that the cartridges were made from cow and pig fat.

revolt of 1857 was caused due to various reasons prominent being military. the major military reasons were:
1. Low pay given to the indian soldiers as compared to their british counterparts; british soldiers were paid around 8 times more than indians
2. Bleak prospects of Promotion ; Indian soldiers could not acquire ranks higher than those of subedar in british army. even those who previously held higher position were deprived of it.
3. Religious Problems; british did not like the indian soldiers wearing turbans or keeping a beard they also did not follow caste system in providing preferences to the soldiers.
