The Shakyas had their own union. At the age of twenty, every Shakya Tarun had to be initiated into Shakya Sangha and become a member of the Sangh. When Siddharth Gautam was twenty years old, he also joined the membership of Shakya Sangha. He was a very devoted and firm member of the Sangh. He was very interested in the affairs of the Sangh. His conduct as a member of the Sangh was an example. He made himself the favorite of everyone. According to the rules of Shakya Sangha, Siddhartha had spent eight years becoming a member of Shakya Sangha. In the eighth year, an incident happened which became sad for Shuddhodan's family. A critical situation arose in Siddharth's life. Adjacent to the Shakya kingdom was the kingdom of the Kolis. The Rohini River was the dividing line of the two states. Both Shakya and Kolis used to irrigate their fields with the water of Rohini river. On every crop, they used to dispute among themselves who would use Rohini water first and how much.
