As they say, life is unpredictable at best. And for me, it was always about trying new things to see if they would work out. But becoming an actor was never on my wish list.

In 1984, I was pursuing a degree in hotel management in Delhi but was not enjoying the course at all. I decided to quit college and studies altogether but without a clue about what I would do next. And for some reason, I turned to theatre.

My decision came as a surprise to my family and was met with strong opposition. Nevertheless, I started hanging out at Shri Ram Centre for Performing Arts in Delhi and was selected by director Surender Gupta to play a small role in his play titled Kaath Ki Gaddi. With that, I embarked on a journey that changed the course of my life.

I moved base to Mumbai in 1988 in search of work. The same year, I made my debut opposite Kimi Katkar in a film titled Rama O Rama. A big milestone was bagging a role in the film Karan Arjun (1995) starring Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan. In the film, which was a huge hit, I played a negative role that was initially offered to Gulshan Grover. But since he was unable to commit on dates, director Rakesh Roshan was on the lookout for a replacement. Fortunately, Vimal Kumar, a film producer, recommended my name to Roshan. I showed Roshan my work from a film called Ishq Mein Jeena Ishq Mein Marna (1994) and he immediately handed me Rs 5,000 as advance. After Karan Arjun I was inundated with offers for films and television serials.

Around 2002, I was shooting three television shows together without a break. One day I got home and stared at my face in the mirror and got scared as I looked weak, overworked and out of shape. I realised that it was time to step back for a while. I did practically nothing for one-and-a-half years and returned to work a different person. The phase changed my perspective towards life and taught me that it isn’t quantity but the quality of work that matters.

Getting to play Vibhuti Narayan Mishra in Bhabi Ji Ghar Par Hai that’s currently on air has been a welcome relief as it came to me at a time when I was going through a rough patch. The show has not only topped popularity charts but also made me a household name.
