In the poem The Eagle and the Beetle by Vikram Seth the eagle eats a beetle's dear beloved friend hare, however gets more than she bargained for thinking beetle to be too small for real retribution. The moral of the poem is even the weakest will find ways to avenge a wrong.

Explanation:

  • An Eagle was pursuing a hare that was was running for its life and when it  notices a beetle and begs for help. Therefore, when the Eagle came  for the hare the Beetle warned her not to touch the hare, as it was under its protection. However, the Eagle did not notice Beetle since it was so small, and the Eagle seized the hare and ate it up.
  • The Beetle  seeing this never forgot this and decided to avenge the Eagle. The beetle kept an eye on the Eagle's nest, and whenever the Eagle laid eggs, the beetle climbed up the tree and rolled the eggs out of the nest and broke it. Finally, the Eagle got so worried over the loss of her eggs that she went up to Jupiter, the protector of Eagles, and begged him to give her a safe place to lay her eggs. Jupiter let her lay her eggs in his lap.
  • However,  the Beetle  had noticed this and made a ball of dirt and flew up and placed it in Jupiter's lap. When Jupiter saw the dirt, he thought it was dirt and stood up to shake it out of his robe, forgetting about the eggs in his lap, and while removing the dirt he also pushed the eggs from his lap hence breaking the eggs. Since then, it is believed that Eagles never lay their eggs at the season when Beetles are about
