Covalent bond : In 1919 Lewis suggested that there are atoms which attain inert gas configuration (i.e. 1s2 or ns2np6 configuration) by sharing one or more electron pairs with similar or dissimilar atoms. Each atom contributes one electron to the shared electron pair and has equal claim on the shared electron pair. Langmuir called the Lewis electron pair bond a covalent bond. Thus the concept of covalent bond is known as Lewis Langmuir concept. A shared pair of electron is represented as a dash (-) and is responsible for holding the two atoms together. . A covalent bond may be defined as follows:

The attractive force which exists due to the mutual sharing of electrons betweer the two atoms of similar electronegativity or having small difference in electronegativitie is called a covalent bond.

Answer:

Covalent bond is a bond formed by sharing of electrons . Carbon is an atom which has formed largest number of compounds by this bond. Some atoms can't form the ionic bond therefore , they have to form convalent bond to make thrm stable.

hope it will help you
