The Chief Minister of Telangana, Sri K. Chandra Shekar Rao Garu launched the Telangana ku Haritha Haram programme on Friday 3 July 2015 at Chilkur in Ranga Reddy District. At present 25.16% of land in the State is under forests. The National Forest Policy aims to increase the forest cover in the Telangana to 33% of the total geographical area of the State.

There are two fold thrust areas. The initiatives to be taken up in the notified forest areas and in the areas outside the notified forest areas. Rejuvenating degraded forests, effective protection of forests against smuggling, grazing, encroachment, fire and intensive soil and moisture conservations are some of the measures to achieve the first objective.

The second objective will be achieved by Social Forestry. Massive planting activities will be taken up in the areas outside the notified forest areas like road side avenues, barren hill, tank bunds, river and canal bank, institutional premises, foreshore areas, religious places, community lands, housing colonies, industrial parks, municipalities etc. By doing this the programme aims to maintain environmental stability and ecological balance which is essential for the sustenance of all life forms, human, animal and plants.

The officials of the Project have said that in the coming three years the State government plans to plant 230 crore seedlings or saplings. This is a great a project to be taken up by a State. It will lead to the next status of Bangaru Telangana for the State.
