The Integral part of a logarithm is called Characteristic.

The Decimal part of a logarithm is called Mantissa.

For example,

consider, N>0

Then,$log_{10} N$

consist two parts one is Characteristic and other is Mantissa.

$log_{10} 15$=1.176=1+0.176

Where,1 is Characteristic

and 0.176 is Mantissa
