The northern plains are an important physical division of India. They are situated to the south of the Himalayas. These plains are also known as the Indo-Gangetic Plains. The Northern Plains are formed by the silt deposited by Himalayan rivers and their tributaries.

They are drained by rivers Ganga, Brahmaputra, Indus. So, to feed countryNorthern Plains are necessary. The northern plains in general and Punjab in particular is the wheat bowl of India.The Northern Plainsare important to India because of the following reasons:

(а) Extremely fertile and good for crops.

(b) Rivers are navigable throughout the year,

(c) Flat land- good for roads and railways,

(d) Irrigational facilities.

(e) For construction of H.E.P. Plants.
