The history of Madurai dates back to the 3rd century BCE, when
Megasthenes is believed to have visited the city. He referred to the city as
‘Methora’. According to Sangam literature, Madurai was the capital of the Pandyan dynasty. Roman historians Pliny the Younger, Ptolemy and Greek
geographer Strabo had also mentioned Madurai in their works. After the
Sangam age, Madurai came under the rule of the Kalabhra dynasty, which
was overthrown by the Pandyas around 590 CE, who were then overthrown
by the Chola dynasty in early 9th century. Later, it came under the rule of the
Delhi Sultanate, out of which the Madurai Sultanate was separated and ran
as an independent kingdom. In 1378 CE, the Vijayanagara empire annexed
the city. In 1559 CE, it became independent from the empire and came under
the Nayaks. Later, it was captured by Chanda Sahib Arcot Nawab and
Muhammed Yusuf Khan. In 1801, the British East India Company took over
the area. During the freedom struggle, Mahatma Gandhi first adopted the loin
cloth as his attire, in Madurai.
