The planned towns of Harappa and Mohenjo-daro were divided into two parts- the citadel on a raised ground and the lower town at a lower height. Walls of baked bricks were built around each part to protect them from floods. To make the walls strong, the bricks were laid in an interlocking pattern.
CITADEL : The most important public buildings in these cities were located in the Citadels. Some very large building found at several sites are believed to be granaries. The largest granary has been found at Mohenjo-daro.
THE GREAT BATH : Archaeologists have unearthed a tank in the Citadel mound at Mohenjo-daro. The floor of the tank was made of burnt bricks. The tank has stairs on both ends along with side rooms. A well has also been discovered in one of the adjacent rooms. One of the corners of the tank is known as a Great Bath.
THE LOWER TOWN :
The common people probably lived in the lower town which consisted of a smaller houses. The lower town was extremely well planned with houses built on either side of the streets.
DWELLING HOUSES :
Residential houses were built in large blocks along both side of the streets and varied in size. They were built on raised platforms or plinths that rose above Street levels Stairs led to the house. The houses were double storeyed with flat roofs. Some houses were very large while others had two small rooms.
DRAINAGE SYSTEM :
The cities had an excellent and well planned drainage system. The bathrooms have sloping floats and house drains were connected to the main drain. The main drains which ran along the sides of the streets were covered with bricks. There were manholes at regular intervals which was cleaned regularly.

Answer:
Town planning
- Mohenjo-daro has a planned layout with rectilinear buildings arranged on a grid plan.
- Most were built of fired and mortared brick; some incorporated sun-dried mud-brick and wooden superstructures. Sites were often raised, or built on man made hills. This could be to combat flooding in the nearby areas.
