All That Glitters Is Not Gold

by XYZ

I recently brought a beautiful watch from a local store and considered it one of my prized possessions. My friend had asked me to buy one which was slightly expensive and rather dull looking. But I preferred this one as it was more beautiful and cheaper. However, I regretted it later because this watch stopped after one week and was beyond repair, while the one which my friend had suggested and bought, was still working.

It is an old saying that appearances are often deceptive. We should not judge a person or a thing based on their appearance. Appearance is a superficial way of looking at a person or an object. But when you examine things from close quarters, they tend to look different and even disappointing. There’s a famous proverb that ‘everything that glitters is not gold’. From my experience, I learnt that we should try to find out the exact nature of things without getting tempted by outward show. We should try to judge a person or a thing by their deeds and inner worth and not by their external beauty.

‘All that glitters is not gold’ is a popular saying warning against falsehood. This proverb means that “not all things that seem appealing are actually good for us”.

Gold is bright and shines brightly , while there are many things which shines brightly like glitter but are not gold.

Similarly, a thing may be  beautiful, but it may not be valuable. We should not judge a thing by its outer side ; we should examine the thing carefully and find out if it has any real value.

so , a person should be judged by his inner qualities and not by his outer side . A person should never be judged by his outward appearance and his words.  An attractive exterior may be false. The proverb tells us that we should develop the habit of forming a correct judgment and study things carefully and minutely so that we may not be deceived by outer side.
