Deforestation: a threat to the planet
Deforestation is the permanent removal of trees to make room for something besides the forest. Multiple factors, either of human or natural origin, cause deforestation. Natural factors include forest fires or parasite-caused diseases. Nevertheless, human activities are the main cause of deforestation. Agriculture causes around 80% of deforestation. The construction of human infrastructures has also been driving deforestation. The populational shift is also contributing to deforestation. What are the effects of deforestation? The loss of trees can cause desertification, soil erosion, flooding, and a host of problems for indigenous people. One of the most unsettling effects of deforestation is the loss of animal and plant species. In addition to the loss of habitat, the lack of trees also allows high amounts of greenhouse gases to be released into the atmosphere. Forests act as valuable carbon sinks by absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Deforested areas lose that ability and release more carbon. Forests still cover about 30 per cent of the world’s land area, but they are disappearing at an alarming rate. So how can we reduce deforestation? We should practise afforestation which is growing of trees. The use of plant-based products should increase. This would force industries to grow more trees. Furthermore, people should grow plants in their houses. The government should take strict actions against people who are illegally cutting down trees. The essence of plant life in the forest is unquestionable. To ensure a greener environment we must all join the efforts in reducing deforestation.
Hope this helps :)
