અમદાવાદ દેશના વિકસિત શહેરોમાંનું એક છે. અમદાવાદ કર્ણાવતી તરીકે પણ ઓળખાય છે અને તે ગુજરાત રાજ્યનું સૌથી મોટું શહેર છે. સાબરમતી નદીના કાંઠે સ્થિત અમદાવાદ એક શાંતિપૂર્ણ શહેર છે. જુલાઈ 2017 માં યુનેસ્કો દ્વારા અમદાવાદ  શહેરને વર્લ્ડ હેરિટેજ સિટી તરીકે જાહેર કરાઈ હતી.

અગાઉના ઐતિહાસિક સમયમાં અમદાવાદને આશાવલ તરીકે ઓળખવામાં આવતું હતું. 14 મી સદીમાં ગુજરાત દિલ્હી સલ્તનતના શાસક હેઠળ આવ્યું. અત્યારના અમદાવાદની સ્થાપના તે વખતના ગુજરાતના સુલતાન અહમદશાહ બાદશાહ દ્વારા 1411 માં કરાઇ હતી. તે સમયે અમદાવાદ અહમદાબાદ તરીકે ઓળખાતું હતુ જે વખત જતાં અપભ્રંશ થઇ અમદાવાદ તરીકે ઓળખાવા લાગ્યું. અમદાવાદમાં મહાત્મા ગાંધીએ બે આશ્રમ-સત્યાગ્રહ આશ્રમ અને કોચરાબ આશ્રમની સ્થાપના કરી હતી. સ્વતંત્રતા સંઘર્ષ દરમિયાન અમદાવાદ અને રાજ્યએ મોટી ભૂમિકા ભજવી હતી. સ્વતંત્ર ભારતમાં અમદાવાદ ગુજરાતની રાજધાનીનું શહેર બન્યું હતું.

નવરાત્રી, દિવાળી, જન્માષ્ટમી વગેરે અમદાવાદીઓના પ્રિય તહેવાર છે. અમદાવાદમાં શિક્ષણ પ્રણાલી ખૂબ અદ્યતન છે અને વિશ્વભરના લોકો આ શહેરમાં અભ્યાસ માટે આવે છે અને અભ્યાસ કરે છે. પ્રખ્યાત મેનેજમેન્ટ કોલેજ આઇઆઇએમ, નિરમા ઇસ્ટિટ્યુટ, એનઆઇડી, ગુજરાત યુનિવર્સિટી વગેરે અમદાવાદની જાણીતી શૈક્ષણીક સંસ્થાઓ છે. સીદી સૈયદની જાળી, લાલ દરવાજા, પોળો વગેરે અમદાવાદના ઐતિહાસિક જોવાલાયક  સ્થળો છે.

History
Ahamadabad in the earlier historic times was known as Ashaval. When the war between Karna and Bhik took place,the city was won by the Karna of Chaulukya won the battle and named the city as Karnavati.Gujarat later came under the ruler of Delhi Sultanate in the 14th century. In 15th century Zafar Khan Crowned himself as the sultan of the state.Gujarat state is also the home of Mahatma Gandhi,and the city also has influences that guide everyone towards the struggle period.Mahatma Gandhi also established two ashrams - The sathyagraha ashram and the Kochrab Ashram.The Dandi slat March also took place in this state .It played a major role during the freedom struggle. Ahamedabad was to be the capital city but Gandhi Nagar over took as.it was a new and a well planned city.. It has also faced bombings and terrorist attacks.
