Gases released from industries by burning of fossil fuels trap the sun's rays by reducing their reflection, thus keeping temperatures high. This is known as the greenhouse effect. A greenhouse is a glass structure used for growing plants in a cold climate. The glass lets sunlight in, but prevents heat from going out, keeping the inside warm. Similarly, the earth's atmosphere traps solar radiation, thus rasing the surface temperature. .
