Starting with Bengal, they conquered almost the whole country.
After this phase of conquest, they began to economically exploit India.
The Indians were technologically backward. The British, on the other hand, had developed new techniques of warfare.
The British strength lay in their navy. None of the Indian rulers had a strong Navy.
Lack of Unity among the native rulers, neglect of the masses and technological backwardness of the Indians enabled the British to conquer India and establish an Empire.
