Distance:

1)It is a scalar quantity.

2)It is the actual length of path between initial and final position.

3)It is always equal to or greater than displacement.

4)It can never be negative or zero.

5)distance per unit time is called speed.

Displacement :

1)It is a vector quantity.

2)It is the shortest path between initial and final position.

3) It is always equal to or less than distance.

4)It can be negative or zero.

5)Displacement per unit time is called velocity.

Displacement decreases with time, whereas distance does not decrease with time. The value of displacement can be positive, negative or even zero, but the value of the distance is always positive. Distance is a scalar measure, which takes into account the magnitude only, i.e. we need to specify only the numerical value.
