answer :-
An electrode reaction refers to the net oxidation or reduction process that takes place at an electrode.
This reaction may take place in a single electron-transfer step, or as a succession of two or more steps. The substances that receive and lose electrons are called the electro active species.
dissociation of NaOH :
NaOH →Na+ + OH−
Dissociation of H2O :
H2O →H+ +OH−
Since water is more easily reduced than sodium ions, reaction at cathode :
4H2O +4e →2H2 + 4OH−
reaction at anode :
4OH− →O2 + 2H2O + 4e

if the electrolysis is taking place at cathode(negative electrode)
then the cations(the positive ions) will move towards it.
cations__cathode
and cathode is an reducing electrode ..i.e: being an negative electrode it is an electron giver/donor.
so if y is a cation with valency +1 , the reaction will be:
y+1 +1e- ____y(neutral ion)
and if the electrode is a positive one,,,
it is called anode and negative ions(anions) moves towards it.
anode is an oxidizing electrode...i.e the name itself oxidation means removal of electrons.
so if x is an anion then the anode reactions will be
(x with valency -1)
x-1 -1e- ____x(neutral ion)
hope it helps u!
all the best
