Buccal cavity :-
- The buccal cavity is involved in injection or the taking in of food. The process of digestion or breaking down of the food into simple substances called sugar, begins in the mouth and it continues the process up to the small intestine. It's also known as an oral cavity.
- This consists of the teeth, salivary glands and the tongue.
Parts of the buccal cavity :-
Teeth :-
- Teeth helps us to tear, cut and chew the food into smaller pieces. There are four types of teeth namely, Incisors, Canines, Premolars and Molars.
- Children who are between 6 months to 8 years of age have 20 temporary milk teeth. These milk teeth are replaced with 32 permanent teeth as they grow older.
- Each tooth is rooted into the gums in the mouth. The white part of the tooth is known as the crown.
Salivary glands :-
- Salivary glands secrete saliva. It's a clear liquid which is a mixture of water and digestive enzymes.
- It moistens the food and helps break down the complex substance i.e, starch into simple sugars.
Tongue :-
- The tongue is a muscular organ that is attached to the floor of the buccal cavity.
- It helps mixing the food with saliva and it forms a bolus that is swallowed.
- It also has taste buds which helps us defect different types of tastes in food.
