The ratio between the volumes of the reactant gases and the gaseousproducts can be expressed in simple whole numbers. 2 molecules of hydrogen + 1 molecule of oxygen = 1 molecule of water. The law of combining gases was made public by Joseph Louis Gay-Lussac in 1808.

"The ratio between the valumes of gaseous reactants and products can be expressed in a simple whole numbers"

for example:

H2 + Cl2 -----> 2HCl

1v 1v 2v

In the above reaction the ratio of volumes of hydrogen, chlorine and hydrogen chloride is 1:1:2 which is a simple whole number.
