the mouth leads to the buccal cavity or oral cavity.the oral cavity has number of teeth and muscular tongue.Each tooth is embedded in a socket of jaw bone. This type of arrangement is called thecodont.

majority of mammals including human being formed two sets of teeth during their life,a set of temporary milk or deciduous teeth replaced by a set of permanent or adult teeth. this type of dentition is called DIPHYODONT.

An adult human being has 32 permanent teeth which are of four different types.

  1. incisors(I)
  2. canine(C)
  3. premolar(P)

4. molars(M)

arrangement of teeth in each half of the upper and lower jaw in the order I,C,PM,M represented by dental formula which human being .

there functions:

  • incisors : 1. it helps you pronounce word as you speak. 2. incisors also support the lips. 3. 4 at top and 4 at the bottom which bite into the food you eat.
  • canine: dentist call these slightly pointed teeth cuspids,and like incisors, they cut and shear food and support lips.
  • premolar: yaar used into chew food and maintain height of the face. there are 8 premolars in adult mouth: 4 on the top and 4 on the bottom.
  • molars: these are your widest ,flattest teeth , and there are 12 altogether : six in the opposite and six in the lower.like premolar molars are used for chewing food and to maintain the height of the face. lower molars have 2 roots while upper molars have 3.

the hard chewing surface of the teeth, made up of enamel ,helps in mastication of food.
