Following precautions are needed while reading a laboratory thermometer:

(i) The thermometer should be kept upright not tilted.

(ii) Bulb should be surrounded from all sides by the substance of which the temperature is to be measured.

(iii) The bulb should not touch the surface of the container.

the thermometer must not touch the flask

the thermometer must be held straight i.e. it must not be tilted to get the correct reading

it is necessary to Shake the thermometer before use by holding the end of the thermometer

the substance which is to be measured must be within -110°C to 220°C
