P + 5HNO3 H3PO4 + 5NO2 + H2O. Red phosphorus react with nitric acid to produce phosphoric acid, nitrogen dioxide and water. Nitric acid - concentrated solution. The reaction takes place in a boiling solution.

       This reaction is from class 12 Chemistry NCERT book, p-block elements.

The reaction is as below:-

 P4 + 20HNO3 ------> 4H3PO4 + 20NO2 + 4H2O

The general formula is:

  Nx (non-metal like P4, S8, I2 etc.) + nHNO3 --------> x non-metallic acid + nNO2 + mH2O
