  When a beam is bent one surface undergoes compression while the other undergoes elongation in x and y axis. somewhere between these two extremes there is a layer which don't have any, that layer is a neutral layer and if we have the cross section of the beam in z-axis then the line which is corresponding to the neutral layer is called neutral axis.
