Mr. Merton S. Keith was Helen's tutor under whom she continued her studies after leaving Mr. Gillman's school. He tutored her in algebra,geometry, Latin and Greek. As a tutor, he was patient and explained what Helen did not understand. He made mathematics interesting for her and helped her reluctance to study the subject. Gentle and forbearing, he never let her feel she was any less intelligent.

Merton S Keith was the private tutor of Helen Keller when her mother withdrew her from Cambridge School for Young Ladies after an argument with Gilman. He used to teach her Algebra, Geometry, Greek, and Latin. He helped in her preparation for entering in Radcliffe College. He was a sweet natured, kind-hearted man. He used to divide algebra problems into sections so that Helen could answer them easily. He taught her algebra and other subjects in interesting way. However there was a gap in his knowledge as Helen describes that he has relied on her ability too much that he never taught her how to write in examination. This proves to be a big mistake on his part. Otherwise he was a forgiving and patient man.
