CHARACTERISTICS OF BRYOPHYTES
1. Bryophytes depends on both land and water to meet its need for sexual reproduction. Since it requires both water and land, Bryophytes are considered as the amphibians of the Plant Kingdom.
2. Bryophytes do not have vascular bundles - xylem and phloem in them so they are regarded as atracheophytes.
3. They undergo fertilisation which is external.
4. The male sex organ is antheridium which generates two antherozoids. And the female sex organ is archegonium.
5. In water, an antherozoid fuses with the archegonium and forms zygote.
6. The zygote then eventually turns into sorophytes which releases spores which are haploid in nature.
7. These spores on suitable conditions germinates and forms the gametophytes.
8. Liverwort and Mosses are considered as Bryophytes of the Plant Kingdom.
