The poem 'Means to Attain Happy Life' was composed by Henry Howard, Earl of Surrey. He, along with Thomas Wyatt, were the first Engish poets who have introduced the sonnet form to English literature.

The poem highlights the different things that a man can have in order to attain a happy life. He begins the poem by saying that wealth which is gained without any pain, a decent house and a quiet and contented mind are important to attain a happy life.

Other aspects which are a means to attain happy life, according to the poet, are an understanding friend, a healthy life without illnesses, a family which has a long lineage, a simple but rich diet, wisdom which is combined with simplicity of thought, a night spent in the company of good people with wine and wit, a faithful wife who trusts him and finally death that comes without any fear.

The poem has four quatrains and a rhyme scheme of abab cdcd efef ghgh.
