A taxonomic key is a simple tool used to identify a specific object. A taxonomic key is one of the most useful tools available to scientists trying to identify an unknown organism. Systematists rely on keys to help identify known organisms and determine whether they have discovered a new organism entirely. There are three types of keys that we will discuss; (a) dichotomous; (b) polyclave (also called multiple access or synoptic); and (c) probability. (di - two; chotomy - forked). These keys, which are the most common, were probably first published by Jean Baptiste-Lamarck in 1778 (remember him, Mr.Bracket Key: The most commonly used key by the taxonomists is the bracket key. This key has the advantage that the couplets are composed of alternatives which are side by side for ready comparison.Taxonomic Key: is a device used by biologists for identifying unknown organisms. Keys are constructed so that the user is presented with a series of choices about the characteristics of the unknown organisms; by making the correct choice at each step of the key, the user is ultimately led to the identity of a specimen.
