Transverse wave:The wave in which every particle of the medium vibrate harmonically about its mean position in a direction perpendicular to the direction of propagation of the wave.

Longitudinal  wave:The wave in which each particle of the medium vibrate harmonically about its mean position in a direction parallel to the direction of propagation of the wave.

A wave in which particles of the medium move in parallel to the sound wave is called longitudinal wave.
Example-wave produced by string of sitar

A wave in which the particles of the medium move in perpendicular to the sound wave is called transverse wave.
