Enzymes are biocatalysts, which takes part in the chemical reactions of the body.

Explanation:

  • Enzymes are proteins that catalyzes the biochemical reactions in the body. It is made up of sequence of animo acids which makes up proteins.
  • Most enzymes require a small non protein part to initiate its function, these are called as called as Cofactors.
  • These cofactors are generally made up of ions or other organic and inorganic molecules, and there is also a protein part which is binds with the enzymes and are necessary for their function, these protein part is called as Coenzyme.
  • The binding of these cofactors is necessary for the enzyme to work effectively.
  • When the coenzyme binds with the cofactor and the complete molecule is called as Holoenzyme.
  • Holoenzyme is the active enzyme, DNA Polymerase and RNA Polymerase are the examples of Holoenzymes.
  • Whereas Apoenzyme is the enzyme before the binding of the cofactor, and hence it is not active and doesn't take part in chemical reactions.
  • Examples of Apoenzyme are NAD+, FAD, etc.
