The food we eat enters (ingestion) through the mouth of buccal cavity which consists of teeth, tongue and salivary glands. Teeth help in biting, tearing, grinding and crushing. Tongue is used for mixing, swallowing and tasting. Then, the food is pushed to the stomach by the food pipe or oesophagus or gullet. The stomach is a muscle bag in the upper abdomen. The food is digested here by gastric juices or pepsins and hydrochloric acid. The food is churned into a semi solid paste. The liver secretes bile which is stored in gall bladder and converts fats to fatty acids. The pancreas secretes insulin (regulates blood sugar levels) and pancreatic juices (a mix of several enzymes that convert complex carbohydrates to simple carbohydrates, fats to fatty acids and proteins to peptides and amino acids). Then, the food is passed to the small intestine which helps in digestion by secreting intestinal juices which convert protein to amino acids and carbohydrates to glucose. The process of absorption takes place here. The digested food particles are absorbed by small finger like projections called villi and sent to the blood stream. Absorption of water from food takes place in the large intestine. Undigested food materials are stored in the rectum as semi solid faeces. Excretion takes place from anus.

Keywords:-
Ingestion- the process by which food is taken in by the organism.
Absorption- the process by which digested food molecules are absorbed by the intestine walls and sent to circularly system.
Digestion- process of breaking down complex food molecules to simpler ones with the help of enzymes.
Assimilation- the absorbed food is incorporated into living cells and used by the body for growth.
Egestion- undigested food is removed from the body.
Alimentary canal- a long muscular and coiled tube that starts from the mouth and ends in the anus.
Digestive system- alimentary canal along with associative glands.
