An obvious place to start our discussion would be to first define the Etard reaction. The Etardreaction is an organic transformation in which a methyl group (-CH3) bonded to an aromatic (benzene) ring undergoes an oxidation reaction and becomes an aldehyde functional group. Consider as an example the oxidation of toluene to produce benzaldehyde.
