A simple squamous epithelium (also known as pavement epithelia or epithelium with pavements) are composed of large flat cells whose edges fit very close to each other like the tiles buried in a floor, hence it is also called pavement epithelium.

Structure: The cells are rested on a thin basement membrane (B.M.). If the cells are seen form the surface, they seem to look or be in a polygonal in shape. The nuclei of the cells are especially flattened and often lie at the centre of the cells and cause bulging of cell surface.

Function: They have main functions such as they are protective in function, perform excretion, have gaseous exchange and help in the secretion of the coelomic fluid.
